Static
Tips to find the static indoor IP camera that's right for your application
For security installations that are not actively controlled by a security operator it is often recommended to opt for static surveillance cameras, ensuring that no incident is missed. Be aware that High Definition (HD) and megapixel network cameras have a significantly wider viewing angle compared with, for example, VGA IP cameras. Static HD or multi-megapixel security cameras can often be an effective alternative to pan-tilt-zoom cameras for when large area coverage, such as in a warehouse, is required. As an additional note, be aware that digital pan-tilt-zoom (DPTZ) featuring in many static cameras is of effective use only if the camera’s image resolution is over two megapixels.

More tips to find the static indoor IP camera that's right for you
Select resolution
In order to decide the resolution of your indoor static network cameras, decide the camera's exact purpose. We make a distinction between 'identification' and 'observation.'
If the purpose of the indoor fixed network camera is to 'identify' people or objects in detail then a higher resolution is preferred. However, if the camera's purpose is general viewing or observation, then a lower resolution often will suffice.
Note that ‘identification’ close up is easily achievable but that ‘recognition’ of people or objects further away is more difficult. In those situations ensure you choose the right (long focal) lens in combination with a higher resolution sensor.
Infrared indoor fixed IP cameras
We are often asked for IP cameras ‘that can produce images in complete darkness’. This can be achieved with the help of infrared light. Nowadays there are quite a few indoor fixed network cameras for surveillance with integrated infrared LEDs to choose from. Note that the nighttime images will be in black and white when infrared is used, while daytime images will be in color.
Security cameras without built-in infrared LEDs can be used with separate infrared illuminators if they are infrared sensitive and feature a removable infrared (IR) cut filter.Wired or wireless
Here we have one simple rule. If you can wire it, you should. As we all know from experience, Wi-Fi has limited reach and this applies to wireless network cameras too. If you intend to go wireless, verify that you have a strong Wi-Fi signal at the planned camera location.
Power
Most indoor IP cameras can be powered via PoE (Power-over-Ethernet), allowing power to be sent via the Ethernet cable alongside the video data, making installation much easier. Note that Power-over-Ethernet can be used for distances up to 100 yards.
PoE midspans (injectors) will be required if if your existing network switches lack PoE support.
We are frequently asked about battery-operated IP cameras. Please note that vendors we work with don't offer these.
